The term box spring today doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing it once meant.

A box spring, as it was known, is a type mattress foundation that consists of a wooden frame with coils or springs supporting a mattress.

To ensure that the mattress lasts longer, the coils help to lift some of its weight. They absorb motion from your movements on the bed.

For decades, box springs have been in use. Box springs were initially intended for innerspring mattresses, but they quickly became popular for foam mattresses.

Modern box springs don’t always have coils. These springs are typically wooden-framed boxes with slats and a solid platform to support the mattress.

The modern box spring can be called a box foundation.

When I refer to a spring box, I mean the classic type.

Do You Need A Box Spring?

You may have noticed box springs are not as popular as they used to be when you were looking for a mattress or a bed.

Many online mattress sellers sell wooden or solid metal foundations. Even if they do sell a boxspring, it is most likely that one without springs.

This is because mattresses have changed a lot since decades ago.

Mattresses were then quite thin and often soft. Because they were 2-sided, their mattresses did not have a solid support base.

A box spring was added to the mattress as an extension, providing additional support and comfort.

The quality of today’s mattresses is better.

They use strong foams that can provide sufficient support on their own. They have a firm, thick base that provides support for many years because they are only one-sided.

You don’t need a box spring to support the mattress weight and motion.

Many online mattress sellers, including Leesa, ask you to not place your mattress on a boxspring.

Modern mattresses are much heavier than traditional box springs. They won’t be able to provide the support they require for a long time.

Get In Touch With The Manufacturer

Check the requirements of the manufacturer before you decide whether or not to use a box spring along with your new bed in a box mattress.

Some people will tell you that it is okay to use a conventional box spring, while others will warn that using one will void your warranty.
