How To Care For Your New Online Mattress

You can ensure that your mattress lasts many years by setting it up correctly and properly maintaining it after you have purchased it online.

If you take good care of your mattress, even a budget one can last more than seven years. A premium hybrid or innerspring mattress can last up to 15 years.

These are the top tips for buying an online mattress.

Get It Up On The Right Foundation

Your weight is supported by a mattress, but it needs support. It will eventually sag and become uncomfortable after a few years.

You need the correct base for your mattress. These are some things to consider when selecting a mattress foundation.

  • Box springs of the traditional design are no longer recommended. These springs are not strong enough to support memory foam and latex mattresses. You should only use new box springs if you are forced to. Box springs that are older have too much give.
  • Hybrid and heavy latex mattresses need a foundation with support at the center. This requirement is sometimes required by some manufacturers.
  • Some mattresses are not compatible with slatted platforms. Many manufacturers, particularly those who make memory foam mattresses recommend bunky boards as a solid foundation.
  • For heavy mattresses with innersprings or latex foam, metal platforms are ideal. They offer years of support.
  • Most types of mattress can be used with wooden foundations.
  • For most types of mattresses, adjustable bases are ideal.

Be sure to read the specifications of your mattress before you buy. Some mattresses are not compatible with a power base.

  • Although you can place your mattress on the ground, it is not always a good idea.
  • How To Maintain Your New Mattress

    Use A Mattress Protector

Even if your mattress protector is not required by the manufacturer, you can still buy one. It is absolutely necessary.

In no time, your new mattress will be dirty. It’s more than just dust.

You will find sweat, dead skin cells, hair, and allergens if you have pets.

Protect your mattress with a waterproof protector to prevent staining, mould, and mildew.

Mattress protectors not only protect your health while you sleep but also make your mattress last longer and prevents mould, stains, and other damages.

    Do Not Wash The Cover

Yes, that’s right. The mattress cover should not be washed unless the manufacturer tells you to.

Online mattresses are now made with special fabrics that are breathable, soft and wick moisture better.

These fabrics are not able to withstand heat or harsh washing.

The cover will shrink if washed in a washer and dryer. This can permanently damage it. Even worse damage can be done by a dryer.

It is why I recommend that you purchase a mattress protector.

If you do not want to use a mattress protector you can spot clean the mattress cover with cold water and mild detergent.

If the manufacturer tells you that the cover can be washed, then go ahead.

    Rotate The Mattress

Many companies, including Leesa and Casper, recommend that mattresses be rotated every 3 to 6 months.

This helps to even out the wear and ensures that neither side sags more than the other.

For couples with significantly heavier partners, rotating the mattress is particularly important.

You cannot flip most online mattresses. They are only one-sided.

    Heater Pads: Be Careful

Heating pads are generally safe for mattresses. Be careful with memory foam mattresses.

When heated, viscoelastic foam becomes soft. It may lose its supportive, firm feel over time.

Use the lowest setting if you plan to use a heating pad on a memory foam mattress.

It is also a good idea for you to pre-heat your mattress for 30 minutes, then turn off the heat the rest of the night.

Memory foam retains heat well so you can sleep comfortably even when the heat is off.
