How To Make A Memory Foam Mattress Cooler

1. 1. Get a mattress topper/pad

A mattress pad or topper is the best way to cool down a memory foam mattress.Sometimes the terms pad and topper are interchangeable.

A topper, however, is typically thicker and usually made of foam or latex. We recommend that you get a natural latex topper. It will provide the best cooling.

A foam topper made from gel or perforated foam is best. You can also use a topper with a cooling bamboo/cotton covering.

A mattress pad is typically thinner and has a cover with filling.Cooling pads that are best for you will have a wool or down padding.Cool microfiber pads can also be found, especially those that have a bamboo or cotton rayon cover.

Our reviews of the top cooling pads, toppers and comforters will provide you with specific recommendations.

Notice:If you don’t want to alter the feel of your mattress, you should not make it too firm or soft. While you may feel cooler, your back will still hurt and be sore the next morning.

2. 2. Get An Active Cooling System

Toppers and pads are passive cooling devices. These pads and toppers are made of latex, wool, or gel foam. They can improve ventilation and absorb heat from the skin.

These pads work well for most people. However, a mattress pad might not be sufficient to cool your memory foam mattress if you are extremely hot or live in a hot environment.

Instead, we recommend an active cooling system.

These cooling systems cool you using water or air. These cooling systems are more expensive than mattress toppers but are more effective in keeping you cool.

For those who sweat heavily at night, active cooling systems are great, especially if they use air. Cool air evaporates sweat quickly before it pools in your mattress.

Cooling systems can have two functions. You can have them cool you down and warm you up. They provide all-year comfort.

The BedJet V3 is the best active cooling system. You can control the air-cooled system with a remote control. You can set a temperature or a silent alarm to warm the bed slowly in the morning.

The BedJet V3 has a dual comfort option that couples can enjoy.Dual system allows couples to regulate the temperature of their bed.

The only problem with the BedJet V3? Its price. The water-based Chilipad 3.0 is a great option if you’re looking for something cheaper.

3. Use Cool And Breathable Bedding

Make sure your bedding is breathable before you replace or purchase a mattress pad.

Even if your cooling pad is working, hot sheets can trap heat and make it uncomfortable.

How comfortable and cool you feel in your bed will depend on how sheets, comforter, and pillow are chosen.

These are the top types of cool, breathable bedding.

  • SheetsSheets made from natural fibers such as cotton, linen, eucalyptus and bamboo rayon are best. It is also important to consider the weave. Percale sheets are made with a weave that allows for your bed to breathe, and heat to dissipate.
  • ComfortersThe best cooling is provided by natural down comforters. A microfiber comforter with a breathable covering material such as cotton is the best option. You should also check the fill weight of the comforter and its power. Summer comforters with a cool fill weight range from 50 to 1,701 gm. Fill power is 400-600.
  • PillowsIf you’re a hot-sleeper, a memory foam pillow may be too uncomfortable. A gel or shredded memory-foam pillow is better for you if you don’t like the feeling of memory foam. You can cool your pillow the most with natural materials such as wool, latex, and down. Be sure that the cover is breathable. The best pillow covers/cases made of cotton, bamboo, or Tencel are recommended.

4. Wear Comfortable Sleepwear

You can also become too hot in your sleepwear. Natural fabrics such as wool and cotton are great for choosing cool sleepwear.

Layering too many clothes is a bad idea. You can keep cool by wearing sleepwear that exposes more of your skin, such as a short or sleeveless top.

Another option is to go naked to bed.

This exposes your entire body to the air, which increases thermoregulation.

5. 5.

Cooling the whole room can cool your bed if you are unable to keep it cool. This is easiest by turning down the AC.This is a wasteful practice since it only cools one room. This will increase your energy costs.

You can make your bedroom cooler by opening the windows at night. This is a simple and inexpensive way to do it.This increases airflow and allows heat to escape. This may be sufficient to cool you down, depending on how hot your sleep is.

Use a fan to open windows at night if you are unable to do so due to noise, bugs or your partner.A fan will circulate air and heat dissipating excess heat.

To ensure your sleep is not disturbed, choose a fan that runs quietly or has a low speed silent setting.

A container of water or an icepack can be placed in front of a fan to improve the cooling, particularly on hot nights. It will cool down as the warm air passes through the cold water or the ice. This will make your bedroom very humid.

A portable air conditioner is another option. The Portable AC is basically a smaller version central AC. Because it cools one room only, it is more efficient and less expensive to run.

Portable ACs need ventilation through windows. The package will include a ventilation kit.

Most portable ACs can be set to a specific temperature and the AC will keep it.

Additional Tips

  • Switch to a foundation or bed frame that is breathable. A solid foundation or floor can block airflow and make your mattress more hot. A slatted foundation or floor can provide ventilation to make your bedroom more comfortable.
  • Keep electronics off or switch them on. The heat generated by electronics such as TVs, computers, and lights can be dangerous. You can either turn them off for half an hour before bedtime, or keep your bedroom clear of electronics.
  • A cold shower can help you sleep cooler. You may also find it helps you fall asleep quicker. However, the benefits only last for the first few hours of your stay in bed. Your memory foam mattress will trap heat and make you uncomfortable.
  • On hot days, keep blinds and windows closed. This will keep your bedroom cool and prevent the room temperature from rising throughout the day. Open the windows to let cool air in if the temperature drops at night.
  • Get up earlier in the morning. Don’t exercise too close to bedtime. This will not allow your body to rest and cool down. Your exercise should be done at least 2 hours before bedtime.
  • Reduce your dinner time. Your body’s temperature rises when you eat. The most effective foods for raising your body temperature are those high in fats, protein, and carbohydrates.

To give your body the time it needs to process the food, eat your dinner earlier in your day. Alternately, you can switch to vegetable salads or dinners that don’t raise your body temperature.

  • Get water. Hydration is key to your body’s ability to regulate temperature.
  • Change To A Cool Mattress

You should use at least one of these tips to make your nights more comfortable. If your mattress feels too hot even after using a portable AC or a mattress pad, you may need to replace it.

Memory foam mattresses can sleep quite cool. However, you should consider a different type of mattress to ensure your safety. Hybrid (foam + coils and organic/natural lax are the best cool mattresses.

Hybrid mattresses are cool because of their excellent ventilation. Natural latex mattresses are naturally cool.
